Auburn Makes #2 on the Top 10 List of Alabama Independence Day Celebrations

Communities across the state gear up for the 4th of July with barbecue, fireworks, music, parades and family fun. The Alabama Tourism Department suggests the best places to experience this summer’s patriotic spirit with its list of Top 10 Fourth of July Celebrations. Some are free, many are low-cost and most are within a tank of gas. 

1. Russell Marine July 4th Boat Parade, Alexander City

Deck the deck! Decorate your watercraft with all the patriotic fun you can find. This annual event at Kowaliga Marina draws hundreds of visitors to the main channel of beautiful Lake Martin in Alexander City. It is followed by a concert and huge fireworks display at the Lake Martin Amphitheater. 256-329-0835. www.russelllands.com.

 

2. City of Auburn Annual July 4th Celebration, Auburn

Grab your picnic basket and blanket, bring the family and show your patriotic spirit. Enjoy great food, live musical entertainment and the best fireworks display in the entire area at Auburn’s Duck Samford Football Stadium. Celebrate Alabama to open in Opelika!

Silver Companies has announced plans to develop Celebrate Alabama, a retail, entertainment and attractions destination that would span more than 535 acres along I-85 in Opelika, Ala.  Development plans call for a wide range of shopping, dining and amenities with numerous hotels including an indoor water park hotel, and tourism opportunities that would help celebrate the best the state has to offer.

State of the Art Tennis Facility Opens!

The $4.7 million, 4300-square-foot Yarbrough Tennis Complex in Auburn held its first tournament the weekend of July 14. The facility includes six indoor courts, twelve outdoor hard courts, and sixteen outdoor clay courts, one of them a stadium court. The city of Auburn shares the complex, located on Richland Road, with Auburn University. The University is looking forward to the use of a world-class tournament facility for its athletes while the city will look to bring in events that will impact our local economy.

Facilities also include locker rooms, a lobby, director's office, a lounge, and pro shop.

Marriott Chef Named Alabama's Chef of the Year

With a love for great steaks and quality ingredients, it is no wonder Chef Peter Idsall of the Auburn Opelika Marriott at Grand National was named Alabama’s Chef of the Year. 

 

The Alabama Hospitality Association and the Alabama Restaurant Association presented the eighth annual Hospitality Stars of Alabama awards at a Gala Awards Dinner in Birmingham on Monday, November 5th, 2007 and honored Chef Idsall. These awards recognize outstanding performance, commitment and achievements in the
lodging, tourism and restaurant industry.

"The Chef of the Year Award recognizes the culinary professional who exemplifies culinary excellence through a combination of uniqueness and creativity, or one who has earned a reputation for his or her culinary expertise. The award winner has demonstrated the ability to create positive teamwork within the back-of-the-house staff and has been involved in community efforts," said Layne Lunn of the Alabama Restaurant Association. "And Pete Idsall certainly fits the profile of Chef of the Year, in every way. We are proud as an association and an industry to be associated with Pete Idsall.”
