Dedication of the NEW Auburn Soccer Complex
|
The City of Auburn had the official ribbon cutting for the NEW Auburn Soccer Complex on Saturday, March 20 at 11a.m. Several members from the Auburn community attended the dedication including Mayor Bill Ham Jr. and Auburn City Manager, David Watkins. The state-of-the-art facility is located at 2340 Wire Road across from Tamplin Farms. Phase I of the three-phase project has been completed.
The NEW Auburn Soccer Complex serves as the new home for the Auburn Soccer Association. Phase I of the project includes six full-sized fields with lighting, one unlit field and a paved parking lot with bus access. A concessions building also provides office space, meeting space and restroom facilities. A planned playground will be located near the concession stand. Phase II of the project will consist of a total of 5 fields, 4 which are lighted Phase III will include an indoor complex where only games are played.
“The NEW Auburn Soccer Complex will be among the top 5 in the state,” said Louis Richard, director of coaching and league coordinator for the city of Auburn Parks & Recreation Department. “ Auburn ’s soccer facility is not only an asset to the community, but also to the entire Southeast.” In May of 1996 plans for a new soccer complex came to life for the city of Auburn when the Auburn Soccer Association and the Auburn Parks & Recreation Department developed the first of three major planning documents. Seven years later, the ground breaking for the complex was in January 2003. The Auburn Soccer Association will host the first youth soccer tournament at the NEW Auburn Soccer Complex in September of 2004.
