The E.V. Smith Research Center is the largest outlying research unit in the state. Research areas include the Fields Crops Unit that focuses on the conservation of tillage systems, variety testing, soil fertility, and pest management. In addition, the plant breeding unit specializes in plant breeding for soybeans, cotton, forages, and variety testing. The horticulture unit pertains to the production of vegetable, pecan, and ornamental crops. The beef cattle unit studies beef cattle forage management and supplemental feeding as well as artificial insemination. Lastly, the Biosystems engineering unit specializes in precision agriculture technology, variable rate irrigation, and UAV/UAS.
