Get in the holiday spirit with these 2020 events in Auburn-Opelika

The holidays are finally here and there are tons of activities to keep you busy and get you in the holiday spirit. From snow in Opelika to gingerbread mansions in Auburn, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Please note that safety is the number one priority for our guests, visitors, and neighbors. Masks are required indoors for all public places and events in the state of Alabama, and guidelines are in place to ensure proper distancing and crowd control.

 

Thanksgiving Buffet at The Marriott Resort at Grand National - November 26

Thanksgiving food sounds delicious, but not wanting to cook it yourself? The Marriott's chefs have you covered. They are cooking a delicious Thanksgiving buffet. The cost is $42 per person, $21 for children 6 to 12, and free for children five and under. Tax and gratuity are not included.

 

Storytime with Mrs. Claus at The Marriott Resort - November 27, December 4, 11, 18

Kick-off the holidays in the best way with a storytime read by Mrs. Claus herself. This is a free event in the lobby of the hotel with crafts and treats afterward! 

Blue Friday in Downtown Auburn - November 27

Downtown Auburn will be open on the biggest shopping day of the year. There will be door prizes, exclusive deals, and extended shopping hours so you can get everything you need for family and friends. 

Gingerbread House Building at the Marriott - November 28, December 5, 12, 19

Bring the whole family to build Gingerbread Houses at the Marriott. Each group with get the materials needed to build a house and 90 minutes to complete. Once the time is up Marriott’s Executive Chef will come in and judge the houses. 

Drive-Thru Nativity story at Opelika Sportsplex - December 1-31

The whole month of December the Opelika Sportsplex will be having a drive-thru nativity scene. Come and see this beautiful display in the parking lot of the Sportsplex.

Holiday Decoration Swap and Big Book Sale - December 5

Tired of your Christmas decorations? Want to try something new but don’t want to spend a ton of money? Come to a decoration swap at the Lewis Cooper Jr. Memorial Library

Snow Much Fun Christmas Extravaganza - December 5

Celebrate Christmas in downtown Opelika with the Snow Much Fun Christmas Extravaganza. Opelika’s Official Kick-Off Event to the Christmas Season will be at Courthouse Square on December 5 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. This is a free event for all! This year parade kicks off at 4:30 p.m. and it is a reverse parade.

Downtown Auburn Christmas Parade - December 6

Join the Downtown Merchants Association for the annual Downtown Auburn Christmas Parade at 2 p.m.! The parade will feature local favorites, festive floats, and an appearance by a masked Santa. 

 

Auburn Gingerbread Village Unveiling - December 6

Get excited! After the downtown Aubrun Christmas Parade, The Auburn Hotel will be unveiling its famous Gingerbread house for all to see. It will stay up for your viewing until the end of the year. 

Victorian Front Porch Horse Drawn Carriage Rides - December 9-10, 13

Take a horse-drawn carriage ride on the last night of the Victorian Front Porch Christmas Tour from 5-8 p.m. on December 9-10 and again on December 13 from 2-5 p.m.

Victorian Front Porch Christmas Driving Tour - December 9-13

The tour began in 1993 with just a few homes participating but has grown to include 60 homes on North 8th and 9th street. The homes are decorated with life-size Santas, angels, toys, carousel horses, and Christmas-themed figures. The Victorian Front Porch Christmas Tour has been voted one of the southeast's top-rated tourism events and featured in Better Homes and Gardens and Southern Living.

The event is a self-directed driving tour. However, on Saturday night, North 8th and 9th streets will be closed to traffic to encourage visitors, neighbors, and friends to stroll through the neighborhood. This enables everyone to leisurely enjoy the homes up close, listen to the carolers, and talk with residents dressed in Victorian costumes. This tour begins on North 8th street and 2nd Avenue and includes over ten city blocks. Admission to this spectacular production is free.

 

Victorian Front Porch Christmas Biking Tour - December 10

Ride at your own pace through the beautiful historic homes in downtown Opelika and view how they've been transformed into a colorful, nostalgic reminder of Christmas from a simpler era! The self-led tour begins at 6 p.m.

Christmas in a Railroad Town - December 11

Whether you’re a young child or simply a child at heart – there will be activities for everyone at this great night out in historic downtown Opelika on Friday, December 11.

However, on Saturday night North 8th and 9th streets will be closed to traffic to encourage visitors, neighbors, and friends to stroll through the neighborhood. This enables everyone to leisurely enjoy the homes up close, listen to the carolers, and talk with residents dressed in Victorian costumes. This tour begins on North 8th street and 2nd Avenue and includes over ten city blocks. Admission to this spectacular production is free.

Ho Ho Ho Hike at Kreher - December 12

Come help us find Santa in the Kreher Nature Center forest on Saturday, December 12! This year’s HoHoHo Hike has a new twist!  Tickets are sold for specific time slots.  On our annual HoHoHo Hike, we will venture out on a guided hike to try and find the elusive man in red. 

A Holiday Walk in the Woods - December 18-19

Take a walk in the woods with a fun holiday twist. A guide will walk you with a small group and stop at different spots and let the local artist get you in the spirit with songs. The Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center will offer a trail stop with woodsy holiday art activities. 

Jingle Jog 5k - December 19

Runoff those holiday treats with the Jingle Jog in downtown Auburn. Get out the tacky sweaters and jolly hats to join Active Auburn at 7 a.m. and beginning in waves.
