Part of what makes Auburn the “Loveliest Village on the Plains” is the community that calls it home. That’s why Auburn Art is so passionate about featuring the work of local artists in their downtown store and online. The latest artist to be featured at Auburn Art is Thomas Kaufmann, an Auburn University grad who works as an artist, educator, preservationist and architectural illustrator.

Kaufmann’s pieces featured in Auburn Art revolve around what know and love – Auburn. His color pencil, acrylic and pen designs contain a range of AU charm, from historic landmarks to Auburn University athletes doing what they do best. Some of his artwork contains bygone landmarks we still hold dear, like the Sani-Freeze and Tiger Theater. His collection also showcases football greats, including 1932’s Jimmy Hitchcock and 1942’s Monk Gafford. Other pieces by Kaufmann are of more modern subjects, featuring Cam Newton’s defeat over Georgia and LSU. Kaufmann’s pieces not only remind us of football greats and the places that Auburn holds in the history books, but they also unite Auburn fans of all ages with what makes Auburn so great – shared loves, laughs and passions.

Perhaps the only thing more interesting than Kaufmann’s pieces is his life. From his years studying design to his ever-expanding art career, Kaufmann has pulled inspiration from architecture and historic preservation. Kaufmann also has a special interest in preserving fire looking towers, serving in a volunteer capacity as an Area Representative for Alabama and for the Forest Fire Lookout Association (FFLA) from 2009 – 2012. He is also interested in studying striking tower clocks and bells. Kaufmann is currently at work on a book about Alabama tower clocks and bells, which leads him to climb steeples and towers across the state of Alabama as part of his research.
