Daytime activity: Hiking and biking at Chewacla State Park followed by a Toomer’s famous lemonade

This 696-acre state park is a nature lover's dream with over 30 miles of the South's best mountain biking and hiking trails. Wildlife, waterfalls, flora, fauna, and the joy of the great outdoors will keep nature enthusiasts entertained, while the miles of trails will delight both fitness enthusiasts as well as those who enjoy a simple stroll in the year-round gentle weather of the area. After an adventurous day, cool off with a fresh-squeezed Toomer’s Lemonade. Handmade to order, this tart and tangy concoction is the hallmark of Toomer’s Drugstore, a beloved Auburn icon and the only business that has occupied this historic corner since 1896.

Dinner date: Dinner and dessert at Acre

From award-winning, James Beard nominee, Chef David Bancroft’s Acre has been a staple of the community since 2013 and is ideal for any date – first dates, anniversaries, you name it! Located in the heart of Auburn just three blocks from Toomer’s Corner, this upscale Southern restaurant boasts “traditional tastes of the Deep South in a totally fresh and modern way.” Along those lines, Acre has incredible desserts—and the best part is, you don’t have to choose just one! The “dessert board” offers guests a taste of specialty, seasonal desserts such as cinnamon apple bread pudding, charred sweet corn cobbler, peanut butter pie and a chocolate torte.

Night Life: Ampersand Wine Bar

This snazzy-chic hidden gem is the perfect place to begin your night out. Ampersand’s atmosphere has been described as “your crazy rich aunt’s living room” and features tufted velvet sofas and glamorous statement wallpapers. The bar is most notably known for offering the largest wine-by-the-glass selection in the Southeast.

Mountain biking not quite your thing? Don't worry, we thought of more:

  • After a glass of wine (or two!) at Ampersand, step outside and explore the numerous music venues along Railroad Avenue. Breweries, a distillery (the first legal distillery in Alabama since prohibition) and even a speak-easy are all within walking distance from our favorite wine bar.
  • A day in our area wouldn’t be complete without a hearty, Southern brunch. We’d be remiss not to mention The Hound’s weekend spread featuring local favorites like the shrimp & grits, huevos Houndcheros, and the redneck benedict. All are to die for.
  • Lastly, not all contestants are up for shredding trails, so a more relaxing day-date alternative would be spent in the award-winning spa at the Marriott Resort at Grand National. Blending modern techniques with the natural elements of Alabama, the Spa at Grand National is a serene oasis in a state-of-the-art facility – and very popular around Valentine’s Day.
