AACT will open its 2018-2019 season with Silent Sky by Lauren Gunderson, an award-winning playwright, screenwriter and short story author from Atlanta, GA. This play, much like the movie “Hidden Figures”, is based on the true story of Henrietta Swan Leavitt and the women “computers” of the Harvard Observatory. The women of the Harvard Observatory, though denied use of telescopes, were responsible for some of the greatest astronomical discoveries of the 19th Century. Henrietta Swan Leavitt discovered the method for measuring distances between stars and knowing our place in the universe.

This story reflects many of the challenges faced by women in science at the time, as well as some struggles still present today. The play is warm, witty, at times funny, and AACT also intends to present Silent Sky as a competition entry at the Alabama Conference of Theatre’s play festival in November 2018.

Performances will take place at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center on 222 E Drake Ave., Auburn, Alabama on August 17th, 18th, and 23rd-25th at 7 p.m. with matinees August 19th and 26th at 2 p.m. Suitable for all ages, tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Thursday August 23rd will offer a Pay What You Wish special- drop a few bucks in the jar and join us!
