The tradition of Hey Day began in 1947 when World War II veterans returned to Auburn University's campus under the G.I. Bill. Many of the returning students felt disconnected after their military service, prompting Auburn's Student Government Association and student body to create a day dedicated to making everyone feel welcome. Students began wearing name tags and greeting one another with a simple "hey," fostering the sense of community that has become synonymous with the Auburn Family. More than 75 years later, Hey Day remains one of Auburn's longest-standing traditions, bringing together students, faculty, staff and visitors each fall through the simple act of introducing themselves and saying hello.
When Auburn University's Tony & Libba Rane Culinary Science Center opened in 2022, the campus food hall was named Hey Day Market as a tribute to that same spirit of hospitality and connection.
