Opelika’s Early Investment
Long before pickleball became the fastest growing sport in the country, Opelika was already investing in its future. In 2019, the city opened a 24-court covered, individually fenced, and lighted facility at the Opelika Sportsplex. The courts are free to use and open to the public daily, offering access to one of the most advanced public pickleball complexes in the Southeast.
Since then, the courts have welcomed everyone from casual players to tournament competitors. Events, clinics, and open play draw visitors from across the Southeast. Pickleball is now a leading reason visitors travel to the Auburn-Opelika area, surpassing many other sports and attractions. With over 36 million players nationwide as of 2024, pickleball continues to outpace tennis, racquetball, and other court sports in both participation and popularity.
In just one year, the Opelika Sportsplex pickleball facility welcomed 27,221 visitors from 35 states, more than 80% of whom traveled from outside Opelika. With millions in economic impact, the courts have become much more than a local amenity.

Recognition & Tournaments
That momentum caught the attention of WTVM News, which highlighted Opelika’s growing pickleball scene. The story praised the rare facility layout and Opelika’s standout community.
In 2025, the city hosted the U.S. Senior Pickleball South Zone Championship, drawing more than 270 players from 10 states and generating an estimated $1.3 million in economic impact. Several local players finished as finalists.Overall, Opelika now averages 6–7 tournaments each year across 5 different event rights holders. Together, these tournaments are projected to generate between $700,000 and $1 million in economic impact annually, with an average of 500 players per event. Even more excitement is ahead with the Alabama Amateur Pickleball Championships returning to the Opelika Sportsplex October 24–26.

Community & Business Growth
The growth of the sport has extended into the business community. The Pickleball Store opened in 2023 and quickly became a go-to for paddles, gear, and gifts. In 2024, it was named Opelika’s Emerging Business of the Year. Originally located in Opelika, the store relocated to Auburn in 2025 to offer a more central location for the region’s growing player base.
"Our goal was to create a place where anyone could play, and with the support of the city we accomplished that goal.Whether you are competitive player or just starting out, anyone is welcome here and the response has been incredible."– Jim Young
In Auburn, Lake Wilmore added 12 covered pickleball courts with 6 more under construction. The region continues to support the game and welcome new players.
Pickleball is growing everywhere, but in Opelika, it has become something more. What began as a local investment now fuels tourism, competition, and community. And the momentum is only building.
