Great events don’t happen on their own. At the heart of Auburn–Opelika Tourism’s Volunteer AO program is a commitment to creating smooth, memorable experiences for visitors through the dedication of local volunteers. Karen Gilmore, Experience Manager for Auburn–Opelika Tourism, helps lead the program, which brings together local residents who support everything from sporting tournaments to holiday celebrations, elevating events with the welcoming hospitality the region is known for.
Volunteers support local and national events by welcoming guests, assisting organizers, and filling essential roles that keep events running efficiently. Their presence allows event organizers to focus on execution, knowing the guest experience is in capable, friendly hands.
“Volunteers are the friendly faces greeting guests, the problem-solvers during events, and often the difference between an experience that is simply manageable and one that feels seamless,” said Karen.
"Our goal for Volunteer AO is to be something event organizers and partners can truly count on,” said Karen.
Looking ahead, Auburn–Opelika Tourism is focused on expanding Volunteer AO’s reach and accessibility. In the short term, planned enhancements include improved communication through a potential text-alert system, increased engagement across social media platforms, and expanded outreach on LinkedIn to connect with local service groups and people who care deeply about their community. Together, these efforts are designed to strengthen the volunteer network while making it easier for residents to get involved. In the long term, they also support AOT’s goal of strengthening partnerships with the broader business community, including corporate groups with service or corporate social responsibility goals.
Ultimately, Volunteer AO strengthens Auburn–Opelika by creating welcoming, seamless guest experiences while easing the workload on event organizers. As the program continues to grow, Auburn–Opelika Tourism invites residents to learn more, get involved, and become part of a tradition that reflects the very best of the community.
