Nostalgic Auburn: Iconic Spots That Take Alumni Back in Time
For Auburn University alumni, certain places hold a unique, timeless charm - places that transport them back to their college days. From the traditions of rolling Toomer’s Corner to the spirit of Samford Lawn, these nostalgic spots are part of the Auburn experience that never fades.
Campus Classics: Where Memories Are Made
Auburn’s campus holds many memories. Whether you’re walking through the Quad trying to find your old dorm room or passing Langdon Hall knowing it’s okay to now step on the seal, Auburn holds a special place in the hearts of thousands of alumni. All it takes is taking a walk on campus to experience the joy this university brings. Reminisce college by sitting under the trees at Samford Lawn and remind yourself of what it was like going to class, games, or walking with friends. After a big win, grab a roll of toilet paper and a Toomer's lemonade and roll the oaks in celebration. The historic AU Chapel also stands out as a reminder of Auburn’s lasting traditions, while The Collegiate Hotel, formerly the Wittel Dorm, has an amazing rooftop bar and cozy atmosphere, making it a great place to stop and stay during an Auburn weekend.
Iconic Downtown Locations
Auburn alumni can’t think of downtown without remembering grabbing sandwiches at Momma G’s or finding the perfect game day gear at J&M Bookstore or Anders. J&M Bookstore has been serving the Auburn community since 1953. With a prime location right across from Toomers Corner and Samford Hall, it’s the perfect place for guests to buy Auburn merchandise. The location of Anders Bookstore now is the Graduate Auburn Hotel. The Graduate includes a coffee shop that honors Bo Jackson, a rooftop bar decked out in orange and navy, and rooms that are Auburn-themed. This hotel is the perfect place for alumni to stay and immerse themselves in the Auburn spirit. Another iconic location is the Freewheeler bike mural, painted in the 80s, which is located in downtown Auburn on the wall of a bicycle shop. The bike is to honor one of the ways students get around campus. Downtown Auburn is a special place filled with a lot of history and iconic stops for alumni who are in town visiting.
Auburn’s Breakfast & Lunch Staples
Byron’s Smokehouse and Big Blue Bagel are staples that hold memories for many Auburn alumni. Byron’s Smokehouse was opened in 1989 by Glen and Stephanie Gulledage. They serve both breakfast and lunch. They are known for their Southern-style barbeque and breakfast. Big Blue Bagel was opened in 2000 by Joe Deason. Big Blue Bagel is known for its delicious bagel sandwiches, bagel platters, and omelets. The walls are decorated with nostalgic Auburn photos which gives people a seat in Auburn history. These spots capture the heart of Auburn by blending tradition and Southern charm.
For the Coffee Lovers
Auburn is home to coffee shops that bring back memories of studying and community time with friends. Well Red, located on Opelika Road, is a staple for more recent alumni, as it was opened in 2020. Since 2020, they have expanded to three different locations, serving the community with coffee, wine, pastries, and a store filled with books. It’s the perfect place to go to begin or end your day in Auburn. Another alumni favorite is Ross House. Located on North Ross Street, this coffee shop is known for its wrap-around porch and high-quality coffee and food. Ross House is a longtime favorite for Auburn alumni seeking a welcoming atmosphere. These two coffee shops are great places to stop when back in Auburn.
